Medical doctor (1973), resident in Internal Medicine, specialised in Public Health Medicine (1977).
As WHO staff member, was World Health Representative in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau and Coordinator of the “Global Program on AIDS” for the Sourthern Subregion of Africa (1980-1991).
Former Deputy Director (2001-2005)
Was appointed Director General of Health in 2005.At EU level was member of the High Level Committee on Health and of the Health Security Committee since 2001; Appointed Chief Medical Officer in 2005.
Coordinator of research projects in Public Health; Several publications.
Member of the Portuguese Associations of Epidemiology, Virology, Public Health Promotion and Clinical Study on AIDS.
Invited Professor at The National Public Health School (New University of Lisbon).
